Ma'alaea or Kihei: where to leave for Molokini

Your harbor shapes the whole morning. Ma'alaea means a bigger boat and a longer day; Kihei means a raft and a short hop.

Molokini trips leave from two places on Maui's south coast. Ma'alaea Harbor sits further from the crater and is home to the large catamarans. The Kihei Boat Ramp sits much closer and is where the rafts launch.

Neither is better in general. The question is whether you want the boat to be part of the day, or just the way to the reef.

The quick answer

Choose Ma'alaea for a long, comfortable day on a big boat with meals, stairs into the water and often a second stop. Choose Kihei for a short ride, about 15 minutes according to the raft operators, a two- to three-hour morning and more of your time in the water. If you get seasick, the shorter Kihei ride means less time on open water.

How long is the boat ride to Molokini?

About 15 minutes from the Kihei Boat Ramp, according to the raft operators, and commonly described as about an hour from Ma'alaea Harbor.

Kihei is simply closer: Molokini lies about 2.5 miles west of Makena State Park, just south of the ramp. Ma'alaea is further up the coast, and the larger boats cross the bay to reach the crater. The afternoon Malolo listing describes a 45-minute coastal cruise.

In practice, Ma'alaea suits travelers who want the boat day itself: families, groups who like a meal on deck and anyone happy to spend most of a morning on the water. Kihei suits those who want to snorkel, get back and get on with the day, and confident swimmers who do not mind a ladder.

How long is the boat ride to Molokini Crater?

The ride time is the main reason trip lengths differ: Kihei rafts spend most of a three-hour trip snorkeling, while Ma'alaea boats need five hours or more for the same two stops.

The three-hour Kihei raft plans about an hour at Molokini and about an hour at Turtle Town, according to its listing. A five-and-a-half-hour Ma'alaea catamaran also plans Molokini and Turtle Town, with the extra hours spent crossing, eating and relaxing on deck.

Neither is wasted time if you enjoy being on the water. If you do not, the ride is the part to minimise.

Which boats leave from Ma'alaea, and which from Kihei?

Ma'alaea has the catamarans and the afternoon trip; Kihei has the rafts.

The big catamarans add stairs into the sea, deck space and, on the Calypso, slides. The rafts sit lower and smaller: the two-hour trip runs a 40-foot raft carrying up to 19 passengers, and the 7 AM raft caps its group at 24.

Meals and length of day: Ma'alaea or Kihei?

Ma'alaea trips are half-day outings with breakfast and lunch on most boats. Kihei trips are short mornings with lighter food.

On the Ma'alaea side, the Calypso serves breakfast and lunch, the performance sail a continental breakfast and buffet lunch, the Malolo trip a continental breakfast and deli lunch, and the eco tour breakfast and a grilled lunch. The afternoon trip lists a hot dog lunch.

From Kihei, the three-hour raft lists sandwiches and soft drinks, and the two-hour trip snacks and juice. The sea caves run is the long exception, with breakfast and lunch over five and a half hours. A short Kihei morning leaves the rest of your day free.

Ma'alaea or Kihei if you get seasick?

Kihei, usually, because the ride is much shorter and you spend less time on open water.

A ride of about 15 minutes each way is far less exposure than a crossing of about an hour. That said, the big Ma'alaea catamarans offer more room to move around, which some people prefer.

Whichever you choose, take seasickness tablets before you board if you need them, and pick a morning departure, when the water is usually calmest.

Which harbor gets you to Turtle Town?

Both. Most trips from either harbor add a turtle stop near the Maui shore after Molokini.

From Ma'alaea, the Calypso and the Malolo trip plan Turtle Town, and the eco tour stops at Turtle Arches. From Kihei, the three-hour raft plans Turtle Town, the 7 AM raft a shoreline turtle site, and the sea caves run turtles off Makena. The performance sail and the two-hour trip are Molokini trips, though the two-hour listing switches to Turtle Town if Molokini is not possible.

There is also a third departure point: the Turtle Town kayak paddles about 1.5 miles from Makena Landing Park, no boat needed. More in Turtle Town or Molokini.

Parking and check-in at Ma'alaea and Kihei

Check the meeting point and parking in your listing: they differ by operator, and parking is not always included.

  • The Calypso leaves from slips 76-78 at Ma'alaea and does not include parking.
  • The eco tour meets at the Ma'alaea Harbor Shops, asks for check-in 45 minutes before, and its parking is paid by phone.
  • The performance sail leaves from slip 72; the afternoon trip meets at 300 Ma'alaea Road.
  • The Kihei trips meet at the Kihei Boat Ramp on South Kihei Road; the 7 AM raft asks for check-in at 6:30.

Some trips also ask for an online waiver beforehand, as the Calypso listing states.

Can you swim from Maui to Molokini?

No. Molokini sits about 3 miles out in an open channel with currents outside the cove, and landing on the islet is prohibited.

Molokini is a state seabird sanctuary with no facilities, and it is reached by boat. Snorkelers swim from boats tied to day-use moorings inside the crescent, where the water is sheltered. The currents outside the cove intensify with the afternoon winds, the state notes, which is one more reason the trips go early.

If you want to swim from the shore, the Turtle Town reefs off Makena are reachable by kayak. For the crater itself, read the Molokini Crater guide.
